On the bench
The brace multiplies torque through the radius of its sweep, so a lead-screw auger bit pulls itself into hardwood faster than a powered drill of the same effort. Flip the cam ratchet and you can bore in a corner where the crank can’t make a full turn; palm the free-spinning head and keep your weight behind it to hold the bit square.
Common miss · ✗
Letting the bit skate
Start the lead screw square and let it bite; lean the pad-head off-axis and the auger walks and bores an oval.
